The mills are clacking again
Actively accompanying the Lesachtal Valley corn from cutting of the ears to grinding at the mill.
The area around Maria Luggau used to be known as the Valley of the Thousand Mills. The old, historic mills are now clacking again around the high-situated pilgrimage destination. The mills are named after “their“ farmers and grind the very corn which would have almost disappeared from the valley but is now cultivated again by the farmers as bread cereals. Visiting the Lugger Family with Slow Food Travel, you will learn about the traditional cultivation of corn, how the crop used to be cut and threshed here on the farm-own field – including an exhibition of old artisan tools – and how the grain is turned into fine flour. A visit to the basilica with its late Gothic miraculous image is a must; after all, you are at the pilgrimage destination of Maria Luggau.
