JOURNEY TO THE ROOTS OF GOOD TASTE
In Carinthia, the Lesachtal, Gailtal and Gitschtal valleys and Lake Weissensee have become the world's first Slow Food Travel destination. Or rather, the region has been turned into a Slow Food Travel destination by the local food artisans and food producers, who have always lived the Slow Food philosophy in this tranquil, almost silent border region in the south of Austria. And in the spirit of this slow enjoyment, they are happy to let you look over their shoulders as they work their craft and pass on their knowledge.
The journey takes us to kitchens, smokehouses and maturing cellars, to beehives and bread ovens, to grain mills and butter churns. Slow Food Travel is therefore tailor-made for the two valleys. Many small producers, plenty of tradition, a lot of agriculture - this makes it easy to build enjoyable bridges between guests and the region. Those who come here and commit to the diverse programme, are happy to lend a hand, to help out, to experience how bread or cheese wheels, golden honey or creamy white polenta are created with skilful hand movements.
This allows for a new, tasty feeling for the real value of these natural and outstanding foods. The time invested in these slow products pays off in taste many times over. It's about taking consumers back to that place from where our food originates.
