The new culinary trail in the Lesachtal Valley

Bread and Morenden Trail

A feeling of happiness and a feast for the palate: along this pleasant circular hiking trail you will discover the typical regional delicacies of the Lesachtal Valley, which are still made with much love according to old traditions.

Leave your car and everyday worries at the culture and leisure facility in Klebas near Liesing and treat yourself to a few hours of enjoyment on the Bread and Morenden hiking trail. A comfortable forest path leads directly from the River Gail uphill to the lovingly maintained Steineckenalm. Of course, hikers with more stamina can also choose the steeper trail. But no matter which option you choose, an extensive rest at the Steineckenalm hut, run by the Stadlober family, is a must - and is also a tradition in the Lesachtal Valley. On the one hand, it has always been a popular excursion and hiking destination with a fantastic view, and on the other hand, going for Morenden is simply part of everyday life. A lunch snack consisting of regional products is enjoyed together. This also includes the mountain cheese made from organic hay milk, which Anna, the owner, likes to serve outside.

The term Morende is derived from Italian and means "to snack".

The trail then continues along a forest path into the Obergailtal Valley, past an idyllic place for a stop near the Obergail stream, to the new educational Bee Nature Trail, where you can learn many interesting and exciting facts about the world of bees. Shortly afterwards you arrive in the village of Obergail.

Hofschenke Mühlenstüberl awaits with delicious Lesachtal Valley Stockplattlan - a traditional dessert of stacked yeast pancakes in the Lesachtal Valley. If you want to enjoy a Lesachtal Valley lunch snack with homemade bacon and crusty Lesachtal Valley bread, Alpenhotel Wanderniki is the place to be. Not far away is Berggasthof-Pension Lahnerhof, where the typical Lesachtal Valley Schlipfkrapfen (mezzelune or pasta similar to ravioli) are served.

Now the trail leads along the road past Bergbauernhof Ederhias, which counts the best organic hay milk from Lesachtal cows among its specialities. The trail then runs downhill through the forest to the Viehbrücke bridge and then back to the starting point.

Going for Morenden - a new experience of an old tradition

Meeting in the afternoon for a Morende, eating homemade dishes together and exchanging news and stories. This is what the mountain farming families in the Lesachtal Valley have done for generations. Today they share this tradition with guests and hikers along the Bread and Morenden Trail, and show how they make delicious dishes by hand and with much love.

Best of Lesachtal to go

All the ingredients for a good Morende are also available directly from the farms, at the shops, restaurants and from the farm shop. A piece of Lesachtal Valley and a real original to take home, so to say.

The Lesachtal Bread & Morenden Trail has been awarded the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality and the Carinthian Regionality Prize!
