Over the course of history, the Garnitzenbach stream has carved a 4-kilometre-long gorge into the rocks of the Carnic Alps - the 10,000-year-old Garnitzen Gorge.
The impressive gorge is a wonderful place to recharge your batteries and find relaxation. The fresh air brought by the crystal-clear mountain stream is a boon on hot summer days. With numerous places for a rest and well signposted, the gorge near Möderndorf (2.5 km south of Hermagor) is a popular destination for families and nature lovers.

Geology at your fingertips
On the one hand, the Garnitzen Gorge owes its formation to a geological fault zone in the Carnic Alps, which offered less resistance to the draining water than the surrounding rock formations, and on the other hand to the glaciers melting after the last Ice Age, which sent mighty streams, mixed with a lot of rock material, down to the valley. You can marvel at geology on site at the Garnitzen Gorge Geotrail.
